George Strait was born May 18, 1952 in Poteet Texas. He was the son of a high school teacher who also owned a ranch. His mother left when George was a youngster taking his sister but leaving her sons with his father. At first, he was interested in rock & roll music, playing in garage bands. His music influences changed to Lefty Frizzell, George Jones, Eddy Arnold, Hank Snow and Hank Williams and is known for his Western Swing, Ballads and Traditional Country sound.

George Strait shot to the top of the country charts with his debut album Strait Country (1981), and he's been there ever since, ranking with Elvis, The Beatles and Barbra Streisand as one of the most successful performers in popular music. Strait's more traditional approach to country music has earned comparisons to Bob Wills, Hank Williams and Merle Haggard, and is frequently held up as an antidote to more slick, pop-oriented country music. Strait has had more than 40 number one hits in his career, received numerous country awards and has sold more albums than any country artist. George Harvey Strait (born May 18, 1952) is an American country music artist. George won CMA Entertainer of the year in 1989 and 1990 and ACM Entertainer of the year in 1990. A member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Strait has been nominated for more CMA awards than any other artist. As of 2008, he holds the record for the MOST Number One hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts with forty-three Number Ones on that chart. Counting all other music charts, Strait has amassed a total of fifty-six Number One hits overall, breaking a record previously set by Conway Twitty. Strait’s 38 hit albums (12 multi platinum, 22 platinum and four gold) rank him only behind Elvis Presley and The Beatles. The RIAA have certified his albums at 68× platinum, denoting shipments of 58.5 million in the United States. His best-selling album there, is Pure Country (1992), which sold 6 million (6× platinum). His highest certified album is Strait Out of the Box (1995), which sold 2 million (8× platinum). According to the RIAA, Strait is the eleventh best-selling recording artist in the United States overall.

The family had a 2,000 acre cattle ranch outside of Big Wells, Texas. George Strait parents got divorced when he was in third standard. George Strait mother left with her daughter and George Strait and his brother lived with their father. George Strait initiated his interest in music, playing with a rock band in Pearsall High School. George Strait was extremely influenced by the country singers, like, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Bob Wills and Hank Williams.
