George Strait Biography

George Strait shot to the top of the country charts with his debut album Strait Country (1981), and he's been there ever since, ranking with Elvis, The Beatles and Barbra Streisand as one of the most successful performers in popular music. Strait's more traditional approach to country music has earned comparisons to Bob Wills, Hank Williams and Merle Haggard, and is frequently held up as an antidote to more slick, pop-oriented country music. Strait has had more than 40 number one hits in his career, received numerous country awards and has sold more albums than any country artist. His hit songs include "Unwound" (1981), "All My Exes Live in Texas" (1987), "Lovesick Blues" (1992), "It Just Comes Natural" (2007) and "River of Love" (2009). His recent albums include Honkytonk Ville (2003), Somewhere Down in Texas (2005), Troubadour (2008) and Twang (2009).

Review Somewhere Down In Texas

For the past two and a half decades there has been one constant in country music: the presence of George Strait hit records. From his first Number One song Fool Hearted Memory in early 1982 through his 51st I Hate Everything and right up to today’s You’ll Be There, the words "George Strait" and "country hit" have been synonymous. In fact, he has scored more Number One songs than any other single artist in history and has sold over 62 million records in the meantime amassing 28 platinum or multi-platinum discs – more than any other country artist. He cares most about God, his family, his fans, and his music. Somewhere Down in Texas is by far one of the best to date by George Strait. There is not a song on this album that isn't flat out terrific. The musical talents of his band are evident, and listening to the steel guitar (not to mention a sort of duel between the lead guitar and the piano) will give you chills. Strait's session players – organ and steel guitar, for example – fill the space around his elegant vocals with taste and grace, supplying an audible teardrop and an anguished sigh.

George Strait Biography

Out of all the new country singers to emerge in the early '80s, George Strait stayed the closest to traditional country. Drawing from both the honky tonk and Western swing traditions, Strait didn't refashion the genres; instead, he revitalized them for a new decade. In the process, he became one of the most popular and influential singers of the decade, sparking a wave of neo-traditionalist singers from Randy Travis and Dwight Yoakam to Clint Black, Garth Brooks, and Alan Jackson.

George Strait Biography

George Strait is a country music artist. He was born in Poteet, Texas and grew up in Pearsall, Texas. He began playing with a rock band in high school, but his taste in music turned to country. After high school he enrolled in college, but dropped out and eloped to Mexico with his high school sweetheart, Norma. A few weeks after the elopement they renewed their vows in a Texas church. In 1971, Strait enlisted in the U.S. Army. During his service years he played in an Army sponsored band, Rambling Country, when he was stationed in Hawaii. In 1972, while in Hawaii Norma and George had their first child Jenifer. Strait left the Army in 1975 and went back to school and ended up graduating with a degree in Agriculture in 1979. While attending the university he joined Ace in the Hole Band and played in honky tonk bars around south and central Texas. The band gained a following and opened for national acts. In the late 1970's the band recorded several singles with Dallas, Texas based "D" record label, but the band ultimately failed (although the band does still play as George Strait's touring band under the same name).

George Strait Biography

If there's one guy performing now who's got guaranteed entry into the Country Music Hall Of Fame, it's George Strait. Strait doesn't live in Nashville, and he rarely grants interviews. Instead, he just steadily puts out quality country albums at the rate of one about every 10 months. He's survived the Urban Cowboy fallout and the rise of rockin' country without drastically altering his style of music, a vision that's rooted in the classic Texas sounds of Bob Wills and Lefty Frizzell.
